Yesterday, the teams, Mecatronics Ants and Gorriones.com reached the final of the fourth regional edition of the robotics and science tournament, FIRST LEGO®League (FLL), organised by the Government of Navarre, through CEIN, and the company, GMV. These teams will participate in the national grand finale that will be held on the 11st of March 2012 in Pamplona.
A total of 230 students, aged between 10 and 16 and divided into 23 teams, have participated in this initiative, whose aim is to promote secondary students’ interest in science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurial values. The tournament, held yesterday, granted eight awards in different modalities, which were presented at the end of the day at an event presided by Lourdes Goicoechea, the Regional Minister of Rural Development, Industry, Employment and Environment of the Government of Navarre. Jose Javier Armendariz, Director General of CENER, presented the Award to Robot Design, which was granted to the Iturrama III team.
The FLL tournament is divided into three parts: the robotics competition, and the presentation and defence before the jury of the scientific project, on the one hand, and of the technical project, on the other hand. The scientific project includes details about the construction and programming of the robot and the strategy that the team has chosen to solve the challenges. This year’s FLL has focused on food safety and how the different professions, such as farmers, microbiologists, veterinary surgeons or engineers, can collaborate to enhance the quality and improve the shelf life of food.
The sponsors for this edition of FLL Navarre, include institutions and enterprises such as the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), Pamplona City Council, the National Renewable Energy Centre (CENER), Iberdrola, MTorre and Ausolan.
