Infrastructures and Technical Resources

  • Biomass Laboratory, which carries out analyses and assessment of biofuels and the determination of tar and particles in gasification gas.
  • The Second Generation Biofuel Centre (CB2G) is located in the Navarra town of Aoiz and its main objective is to be a semi-industrial pilot scale test facility able to develop 2nd generation biofuel production processes based on raw materials that are not competitive with the food industry (especially lignocellulosic materials such as forest and grass waste) and the production of biofuels via different production means (thermochemical, biochemical and/or enzymatic) and the application of biorefinery concepts.

The Government of Navarra (Plan Navarra 2012) and the Ministry of Science and Innovation has promoted this project. CENER, owner of the Centre, share the scientific-technical management, both for the design, construction and for the subsequent management of the centre, in collaboration with CIEMAT (Research Centre for Energy, Environment and Technology).

Services of the CB2G:

  • Energy characterisation of biomasses and solid biofuels according to UNE-EN standard:
    • Immediate analysis.
    • Elementary analysis.
    • Calorific power.
    • Granulometric distribution.
    • Pellet durability.
  • Studies and tests on the production of solid roasted and/or densified biofuels based on different biomasses.
  • Development and optimisation of biochemical processes based on biomass.
  • Development and optimisation of fluidised bed gasification processes.
  • Development and optimisation of syngas cleaning processes.
  • Advice and studies on 2nd generation biofuel production processes.

Characteristics and applications:

The CB2G has been design in order to:

  • Be able to process a wide range of biomasses (herbaceous and woody).
  • Include a wide range of pretreatments in agreement with the different biomasses and conversion processes.
  • Have the capacity to develop production process for a wide range of 2nd generation biofuels.
  • Operate continuously, in long-lasting tests, at a significant plant scale, simulating industrial conditions, so that the results obtained and the developments carried out can be extrapolated to industrial scale.
  • Form a biorefinery concept test platform with a view to the integral recovery of biomass.
