Discovering the technological infrastructures and capabilities to generate added value services is one of the main objectives of the visit by a Polish institutional delegation, which has visited the headquarters of the National Renewable Energy Centre in Sarriguren and the 2nd Generation Biofuel Centre, whose final phase is still under construction and which is located in Aoiz, this morning.

The delegation was comprised of six representatives from the Rural Development and Agriculture Committee of the regional parliament and by members of the government of Wielkopolska.

This visit is one of the actions foreseen within the BIOCLUS European project, whose aim is to promote regional competitiveness, to strengthen and manage innovation and to improve research potential in the biomass sector. This project is financed by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union, within the “Regions of Knowledge” Initiative, PF7/245438. It will last for three years (2010 to 2012) with the participation of 20 members from five European regions: Central Finland, Navarra, Western Macedonia (Greece), Slovakia and Wielkopolska (Poland).

Within the context of this same project, a group of technicians from technology centres and universities in Finland, Greece and Poland will also be spending the next few days at CENER. They will remain at the centre’s facilities for two weeks, within a programme for the exchange and residence of experts to study, in this case, the pelletising and roasting systems carried out at the CENER plant in Aoiz. Roasting is a promising technology for the production of advanced solid biofuel and it is considered to be at the cutting edge of biomass treatment alternatives as an energy source.
