A technician from CENER collaborates in a document on renewable energies for the G8

The G8 group has requested the International Energy Agency (IEA) to prepare a new document identifying the actions required for the global development and implementation of renewable energies.

The first document that is being prepared is called “Wind Energy Roadmap", which will be presented at the meeting of the summit of the countries that form the select group of the G8, scheduled for 2010, as well as at the meeting of the Climate Change Group that will be held in Canada at the end of this year (COP15).

Felix Avia, a technician from the National Renewable Energy Centre-CENER, forms part of a group of experts that has been created to prepare this document, which met in Paris at the beginning of the month of June. He attended the meeting as representative of the Wind Energy group of the International Energy Agency – IEA.

Background

In June 2008, The International Energy Agency published the document "Energy Technology Perspectives" (ETP) in response to the help requested within the G8 Action Plan. Insistence is placed in this report on the need for an energy technology revolution if these ambitious objectives to reduce emissions are to be achieved.

One of the scenarios contemplated poses the possibility of reaching the objective to cut CO2 emissions by 50% before the year 2050, an objective set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Renewable energies play an essential role in this scenario, with a contribution of 21% the total estimated saving of CO2 and 46% the world energy production in 2050. The basic question consists in establishing the necessary actions to achieve that technology revolution.
