CENER has started up a new line of work in the Offshore Wind Farm sector, with the main objective of boosting the sector and building the capacity of the department to give support to companies and administrations when executing this type of installation in Spain.
One of CENER’S major actions has been to join Appendix XXIII of the wind energy taskforce of the International Energy Agency “Offshore Wind Energy Technology and Deployment”.
This participation has enabled CENER to become familiar with the use of offshore wind energy farm modelling codes, especially when applied to offshore structures located both in shallow waters and in deep waters and more specifically on floating structures.
On the other hand, within its participation in the European project of the VII Framework Programme “UPWIND”, a validation of the CFD tool that CENER uses (Fluent) in offshore environment has been started, which will end in 2008.
Within the framework of the European project of the VI Framework Programme “POW’WOW” a validation of the prediction models in offshore environment has also been executed, which will be ready in 2007.
CENER is therefore able to offer assessment and prediction services for offshore wind resources, as well as offshore structure modelling and support in the design of new technology for use on offshore plants.
CENER forms part of the REOLTEC network taskforce on offshore wind energy farms and is responsible for the AENOR Taskforce GT3, participating in the preparation of the IEC standard 61400/3, “Wind turbines. Part 3: Requirements for the design of offshore wind turbines”.
