Innovative heliostats characterization system

Heliostat characterization in solar power tower plants is performed through the analysis by image of the heliostat reflected beam that is arrived onto a flat plane in the top of the tower.

This technique is very suitable for R&D centers and small solar plants, however it turns impossible in practical terms and tend to result error-prone if the reflected beam is not intense enough or if it overflows the flat surface, circumstances present in current commercial plants, which are integrated by thousands of heliostats, most of them places at large distances from the tower.

CENER (National Renewable Energy Center) and UNIZAR (University of Zaragoza) have developed and patented a new measure system and characterization procedure that overcome this problematic and improve the accuracy for heliostat characterization, independently of the far they were.
