Summary of the project:

The iEPB project develops a common data model for buildings (iEPB schema) in which the data needed to carry out the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPB) assessments will be integrated. This common data model will contribute to the improvement of the energy performance of the EU building stock by increasing the synchronicity between different energy performance assessments. Among the data to be stored in the iEPB scheme are the data needed for Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) and other complementary tools, in particular the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI), as well as energy renovation recommendations. This iEPB schema could be enlarged and scaled in the future to allow the integration of additional assessments, such as the calculation of the life-cycle global warming potential (LCGWP).

The data model developed aims to be common for the EU, in order to increase consistency and harmonisation among building energy indicators in the different Member States. The added value of this approach for building professionals, product manufacturers and end-users will be demonstrated in the pilot countries (Austria, the Netherlands and Spain). In parallel, the quality of the EPB assessments themselves will be enhanced by facilitating the implementation of the new provisions of the EPBD recast and by promoting procedures based on actual building data.

The proposed action will support the Member States and their implementing agencies in reacting to the new recast EPBD provisions on EPB assessments, while addressing existing weaknesses in the EPCs design and implementation. iEPB is also geared towards supporting the market uptake of SBS assessment tools; in particular EPCs and SRIs, fostering implementation synergies between them and providing added value to key stakeholders.

Project objectives:

  • Increased integration and synchrony of EPCs with other assessment instruments and planning tools
  • Easing collection, aggregation, and analysis of data for building’s performance assessments
  • Improving data accessibility and user friendliness of EPCs
  • Supporting EPB Assessments and Certification schemes to be more EU-compliant, consistent, and accurate

Fostering the EU-wide uptake of the iEPB results referred to as iEPB instruments: the iEPB schema as a common data model, the iEPB web application, the SRI standalone application and the SEPAPTool2iEPB

Main tasks performed by CENER:

CENER will coordinate the work package 3 (WP3) focused on the conceptualisation and implementation of the iEPB instruments whose activities include the definition of the common data model of the multi-EPB assessments (iEPB schema), the development and implementation of the iEPB web application (platform from which the data format will be managed), the development and implementation of the SEPAPTool2iEPB and the development and implementation of an standalone application for the SRI calculation.

CENER will also lead the Implementation of a pilot for dynamic re-scaling based on actual energy use and will provide the training to the entities that carry out the testing and validation of the iEPB instruments in each demonstration context, being in charge of the testing and validation of the SEPAPTool2iEPB and supporting the exploitation of the project results in the Spanish demonstrative ecosystem.
