PROJECT SCOPE
The main objective of the project is to develop and make available to the wind sector a CFD wind and farm design model. The project will allow the development of an experimentally validated model based on field data and standardized so that all potential users in the sector can evaluate any result in the same way and under the same code.
The project will also make it possible to incorporate into the code, in addition to the ‘RANS-type first generation models’, an open source mesh generator for complex terrain, turbulence modeling from ‘second generation’ models (LES – Large Eddy Simulation) as well as a machine position optimization algorithm based on CFD modeling instead of the current analytical modelling. Likewise, the scalability of the code will be analyzed using the Mare Nostrum supercomputer, evaluating it for the conventional computational capabilities available today within the reach of potential users. The scalability (ability to compute efficiently on many processors in parallel) of the OpenFOAM code will be compared to that of the ALYA code, designed by the BSC-CNS specifically for high-performance parallel computing. For this, the same physics of the wind model will also be implemented in ALYA.
CENER´s ROLE
CENER participates in the development and validation of wind and wake models based on the OpenFOAM Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) free code.



The OpenFOAM project has been financed by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. Its fundable budget amounts to €783,773.
