From the REPowerEU plan to the EU Solar Energy Strategy every message claims that solar electricity and heat are key for phasing out EU\u2019s dependence on Russian natural gas. Alongside the massive deployment of PV, including the development of the whole value chain industry in Europe, solar heat and Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) with large thermal storage systems have been identified as essential technologies to achieve such energy independence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moreover, EU 2030 targets won\u2019t be reached without the swift implementation across EU of renewable technologies for heat decarbonization. In this context, industrial heat accounts for 70% of industrial energy demand and most of it can be provided by solar collectors or concentrated solar from 100 to over 500\u00b0C. Nevertheless, administrative hurdles and the gap between the payback times of these investments and the financial requirements of most industrial actors are largely hampering the massive deployment of these technologies.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Consequently, as claimed in the EU Solar Energy Strategy, research and innovation, as well as financial support, is required to further reduce the cost of solar energy technologies, while increasing their energy efficiency and their sustainability, including the manufacturing stage. These new technologies include, among others, solar thermal and CSP technologies as well as products tailored to innovative forms of deployment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this context, CENER (National Renewable Energy Centre of Spain) is actively working in the development of new technologies and innovations seeking to finally definitely unleashing the vast potential of solar thermal and concentrating solar power technologies to decarbonize EU heat and electricity demand. An innovative approach seeking for a breakthrough in CSP technologies is the MOSAIC project.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;16006&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The MOSAIC configuration uses a fixed mirror approach, taking advantage of the properties of spherical concentrators. Indeed, a spherical mirror always focuses the solar radiation along a single line that moves throughout the day as the sun does. Thus, a moving receiver tracking such a line will collect the energy using a single tracking system, that replaces the expensive drives of the thousands of mirrors of commercial CSP plants, achieving high concentration ratios, high thermal efficiency and high operating temperatures while lowering costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This innovative concept has been validated in a relevant environment through the design, optimization, construction and operation of a prototype in Sang\u00fcesa, Spain.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;16007&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most impressive element of the MOSAIC prototype is the fixed solar field, acting as the concentrator of the solar rays and composed of 43 modules of mirrors divided in 3 Fresnel zones to reduce construction cost: a central skull-cap, and 2 concentrical rings. During the optimization process, the amount of energy reflected by each mirror along the year has been analyzed to identify the least cost-effective mirror zones and remove them to achieve both high concentrations and low implementation costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The mobile receiver is made of three parallel helical tubes wound on a cylinder to balance the energy captured from the uneven flux distribution. A couple of flexible hoses link the mobile receiver to the rest of the thermal loop where the heat is stored. This entire thermal loop is integrated in a skid at the top of the central tower. This tower also includes an oven to protect and warm the receiver, thus ensuring it\u2019s ready for operation at any time.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;16008&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, a tailored tracking system moves the receiver throughout the day and the year, covering a wide range of positions. In order to reduce costs and increase simplicity, while keeping high accuracies, the receiver is moved by actuated cables suspended by pulling mechanisms on four simple towers (one at each corner of the solar field).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In October 2021, the system operated successfully for the first time and since then, every day, the receiver chases the reflection of the sun, eager to capture the 300 kW of radiation concentrated on the solar field. A global control system synchronizes the receiver movement and the thermal loop to operate the whole system under the sun.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;16009&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, it is only the beginning of the development of this new technology. With the experience acquired and the data obtained, CENER and its partners are working on new, more efficient and lower-cost configurations. MOSAIC developers can already define with data in hand, which mirror configuration is more efficient, can be assembled more quickly and is the cheapest. Likewise, the operation of the system makes it possible to identify how to improve the positioning system, more robust ways of knowing its position or easier ways to capture and take advantage of the heat generated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The next steps will be focused on paving the way for the commercialization of this concept, building up on this experience of prototype tests and improving O&amp;M by introducing Artificial Intelligence to allow for 100% automatic operational modes.
