The project addresses one of the key challenges of industrial decarbonisation: reducing the dependence on fossil fuels in high-temperature thermal processes, which are traditionally energy-intensive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SOLDEM proposes the development of a hybrid melting unit integrating <strong>concentrated solar heat, renewable electricity, and green hydrogen<\/strong>, enabling progress towards circular, flexible, and low-emission metallurgical processes. The consortium brings together leading research centres, universities, and industrial partners with complementary expertise in concentrated solar technologies, hydrogen systems, materials, and advanced processing solutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The SOLDEM project, coordinated by the <em>Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)<\/em>, aims to develop and demonstrate an innovative hybrid melting unit integrating concentrated solar heat, renewable electricity, and green hydrogen for metal recycling applications. The proposal, identified under n\u00ba <strong>101294209<\/strong>, has received formal notification of acceptance following an excellent evaluation score of <strong>14.00\/15.00<\/strong>. The project will be supported by a total budget of <strong>\u20ac7,999,366.25<\/strong>, of which <strong>\u20ac631,207.50<\/strong> corresponds to CENER.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The consortium is composed of <strong>CNRS (coordinator), UPVD, PANATERE, Amphenol Socapex, DLR, CENER, Radiall, SOHHYTEC, CSP-Boost, KU Leuven, Bulane, Socrate Industrie, and RINA-CSM<\/strong>, combining advanced capabilities in solar technologies, renewable hydrogen, reactor design, modelling and simulation, and industrial validation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>CENER\u2019s role in SOLDEM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within the SOLDEM project, <strong>CENER will contribute its expertise in concentrating solar technologies, optical design, and modelling of complex systems<\/strong>, supporting the development and validation of the key subsystems of the hybrid concept. Activities will focus particularly on the analysis of the optical and energy performance of the solar concentrating system, as well as its behaviour under transient operating conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A significant part of CENER\u2019s work will be dedicated to the <strong>design, optimisation, and validation of the secondary concentrator<\/strong>, addressing critical aspects such as radiative flux distribution and control, material selection, and mechanical integration within the overall system. These activities will combine advanced optical simulation tools with the experimental assessment of realistic design solutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CENER will also participate in <strong>experimental validation activities, material testing, component evaluation, and constructive aspects of the concentrating system<\/strong>, including structure, mirrors, optical alignment, and operational behaviour. These tasks will contribute to assessing system stability, efficiency, and technological feasibility under representative operating conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, CENER will support system-level modelling activities, contributing to the assessment of the integrated behaviour of the different energy subsystems and their interaction under various operational scenarios.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Solar concentration applied to energy-intensive industrial processes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SOLDEM represents a strategic opportunity to demonstrate the potential of <strong>concentrated solar energy in metallurgical applications<\/strong>, which traditionally rely on fossil-based or electricity-intensive heat sources. The proposed hybrid concept will enable the management of solar resource variability through the integration of renewable electricity and hydrogen, supporting flexible operating modes compatible with industrial environments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From a technological perspective, the project will advance the understanding of concentrating solar systems operating at <strong>very high concentration ratios (2000\u20134000 suns)<\/strong>, under demanding transient conditions and strict requirements for thermal stability and radiative flux control. These developments will contribute to the design of more efficient, robust, and industrially viable high-temperature solar solutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Expected impact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The SOLDEM project aims to validate a metal recycling concept fully based on renewable energy carriers, paving the way for <strong>new industrial plant configurations with near-zero CO\u2082 emissions<\/strong>.
