WORK GROUP ON PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BIOMASS

The main representatives from the agricultural biomass sector in Navarra have met this afternoon at the headquarters of CENER in Sarriguren to form part of the first thematic work group on “Production and Use of Agricultural Biomass”. This work table is framed within the second phase of the European project, BIOCLUS, which will end in 2012 and whose aim is to define the strategic lines that research, development and innovation in the biomass sector in the Autonomous Community of Navarra must be based upon.

Technology and agricultural centres, institutions from the sector, universities and private enterprises have taken part in the meeting, whose objective was to discuss the needs of RDI in the production and management of agricultural biomass in Navarra and whose proposals will later be expressed in the Future Action Plan for a Sustainable Use of Biomass. This plan, which will be prepared by partners of the BIOCLUS project, will thus compile the ideas proposed by the key leading players from the biomass sector in Navarra.

The thematic work groups on the use of forest biomass and the logistics supply chain are scheduled to be held in the month of April.

An Action Plan for the Sustainable Use of Biomass will be drafted after these events, between the Government of Navarra (through the Dept. of Rural Development and Environment, the Directorate General for Enterprise from the Department of Innovation, Enterprise and Employment), companies from the sector, BIOTERNA and the National Renewable Energy Centre (CENER), as general project coordinator.

Fostering regional competitiveness, strengthening and managing innovation and improving the research potential in the biomass sector are the main objectives set out by the BIOCLUS project, in which 20 partners from five European regions take part: Central Finland, Navarra, Western Macedonia (Greece), Slovakia and Wielkopolska (Poland).

Funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union, within the “Regions of Knowledge” Initiative FP7/245438, it lasts for three years (2010 to 2012).
