Unveiling CENER’s Blade Wind Laboratory: A Look Inside Our Blade Tests

Have you ever wondered how wind turbine blades are tested to withstand powerful winds for over 20 years? At CENER, we delve deep into these questions and many more within our state-of-the-art laboratories. This newsletter takes you on tour of our facilities, showcasing the cutting-edge technology and expertise we leverage to support the development of Renewable Energies.

 

 

Imagine a colossal wind turbine blade, stretching over 100 meters long and weighing a staggering 50 tons, undergoing rigorous testing. This is the reality at CENER’s Blade Test Laboratory, where we push the boundaries of wind energy technology.

Since its inception in 2008, our blade test laboratory has evolved to accommodate the ever-growing size and complexity of wind turbine blades. We’ve witnessed a remarkable transformation from 30-meter blades weighing 1 ton to today’s state-of-the-art designs.

Our testing benches are designed to replicate the conditions blades face throughout their operational lifespan, which can span decades. By subjecting blades to a series of tests, we simulate in weeks the mechanical stresses they will encounter over years, ensuring their durability and reliability.

Our laboratory boasts two primary test benches:

  • Fatigue Test Bench: This bench simulates the cyclic loading that blades experience over their lifetime.
  • Static Extreme Test Bench: This bench replicates extreme conditions.
  • Blade Tip Test Bench: This bench focuses on testing blade tips, a critical component for capturing maximum energy.

Each test bench incorporates essential components for testing:

  • Foundation: A robust foundation absorbs the loads and ensures stability and accuracy during testing.
  • Single-Axis Actuators or Dual-Axis (new generation): These actuators precisely control the blade’s loads and movements.
  • Control Room: Our advanced control room monitors and manages the testing process 24 x 7.
  • Measurement and Data Acquisition Systems: Sophisticated systems collect and analyze vast amounts of data.

The video showcases the movements of a blade during testing. Oscillations that can reach up to 18 meters at the tip (36 meters in total). This test provides valuable insights into blade behavior and helps identify potential areas for improvement.

By holding all competences in-house, CENER is able to minimize the risks, as well as reduce the delivery time of the results. CENER laboratory provides access to our deep understanding of blade technology and our commitment to delivering reliable and accurate test results.

The data collected from these tests is invaluable for turbine manufacturers and wind turbine owners, helping them to:

  • Validate and certificate their blade designs and identify areas for improvement.
  • Optimize blade performance for maximum energy capture.
  • Ensure the long-term durability of their wind turbine blades.
