CENER and BLUEBOX ENERGY Signed Strategic Co-Development Agreement for Advanced Small Hot-Air Turbine Solutions for Energy Storage Systems

Today, the National Renewable Energy Center of Spain, CENER—a leading technology centre specializing in applied research and renewable energy—and BLUEBOX ENERGY—an innovator dedicated to net zero and net negative carbon energy solutions through cutting-edge hot air turbine technology—officially signed a strategic co-development agreement. This milestone marks the launch of a collaborative effort to advance a breakthrough small hot-air turbine product designed specifically for solar thermal and energy storage applications, setting the stage for long-term partnerships beyond the current initiative.

Addressing Today’s Energy Storage Challenge

In the rapidly evolving global energy landscape, the need for efficient, robust energy storage solutions is more critical than ever. As renewable energy increasingly powers our grids, ensuring a steady, reliable supply calls for innovative storage systems. Thermal storage and Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) are emerging as transformative technologies in this context. In particular, the European R&D initiative ASTERIx-CAESar has demonstrated the significant potential of integrating advanced turbine systems with thermal storage capabilities to balance supply fluctuations and enhance grid stability.

Pioneering Expertise and Synergistic Collaboration

At the heart of this initiative is the unique synergy between two organizations with complementary strengths.

CENER is not only renowned for its leadership in applied research and renewable energy innovations but also stands as the original visionary behind ASTERIx-CAESar—where it currently serves as project coordinator. In addition to providing critical technical know-how, CENER’s role includes ensuring that the design harmoniously integrates with current regulatory and operational frameworks in the energy sector. Their expertise lays the foundation for product development and bridges the gap between cutting-edge research and practical, commercial-ready solutions.

BLUEBOX ENERGY brings advanced engineering capabilities through its proprietary hot air turbine technology. With a strong focus on net zero and net negative carbon targets, BLUEBOX ENERGY has continuously pushed the boundaries of innovation. Their deep expertise in hot air turbine technology will ensure that the final product not only meets but exceeds industry standards for efficiency and safety. This collaboration taps into the best of both worlds—merging comprehensive technical research with robust industrial design—to create a product positioned to redefine energy storage solutions.

Advancing Innovation Under ASTERIx-CAESar and Beyond

Leveraging the framework provided by ASTERIx-CAESar, the two partners are rapidly advancing the development of this state-of-the-art turbine product. The joint project is currently in the exciting phase of prototype construction, with initial trials demonstrating promising potential in both solar thermal storage and CAES applications. Early performance indicators highlight enhanced efficiency and operability features that are key to the product’s future success. Validation tests are scheduled to commence in 2026, where a volumetric air solar receiver will provide heat to compressed air before its expansion in the hot air turbine. Both companies are confident that this innovation will set a new benchmark in the renewable energy sector.

Importantly, while the ASTERIx-CAESar project serves as the launching pad for this development, the strategic co-development agreement between CENER and BLUEBOX ENERGY extends well beyond the current research phase. The collaboration is designed as a long-term effort, paving the way for successive projects and continuous improvements, all aimed at bringing the product to full-scale market commercialization.

A Shared Vision for a Sustainable Future

The strategic partnership between CENER and BLUEBOX ENERGY signifies more than just a joint development venture—it represents a shared vision for a sustainable, net-zero energy future. By combining advanced scientific research with breakthrough engineering practices, the two organizations are set to revolutionize how thermal storage and CAES solutions are deployed in the energy sector. The mutual commitment to innovation and excellence underscores every aspect of this collaboration, ensuring that the final product will transform industry standards and provide significant environmental benefits.

As the project unfolds, both CENER and BLUEBOX ENERGY will continue to leverage their unique strengths to push the boundaries of renewable energy technology. This agreement not only marks a significant step forward in product development but also reinforces the ongoing commitment of both companies to deliver pioneering solutions that address the challenges of modern energy systems.

CENER and BLUEBOX ENERGY look forward to sharing more milestones as they drive forward the future of renewable energy storage with this groundbreaking initiative.
