BIOMASS
Fermentation of industrial-flue gases, syngas and CO₂
TECHNOLOGY READINESS LEVEL (TRL): 5
IP STATUS: The IP is protected under industrial secret.

Value Proposition

CENER’s gas fermentation technology is an effective solution complementary to CO2 capture and storage, that enables the transformation of CO and/or CO2 from syngas and industrial flue-gases into a wide array of biofuels and biobased products.

Added Value

A proprietary presurizable bioreactor boosts gas solubility and selectivity transformation, while engineered and adaptively evolved strains (Archaea, and Clostridia) tolerate real-gas impurities. The modular platform can be integrated with CCUS and renewable H₂ to tune product as: acetate and biomethane and can be configurated as feed two-stage routes to lipids/triglycerides—lowering operating severity versus thermocatalysis and accelerating decarbonization.

Market Applications

  • Advanced biofuels & e-fuels (with green H₂ integration): On-site conversion of CO/CO₂ into acetate, or and biomethane as intermediates for SAF and drop-in fuels.
  • Biological biogas upgrading → Biomethane: Biological polishing of biogas/CO₂-rich tail gases to grid-spec biomethane. Tolerant to variable compositions; modular skids for WWTPs, agri-biogas, and landfill gas sites.
  • Biobased building blocks (fossil alternatives: Acetate as a C₂ platform for chemicals (e.g., solvents, esters, C₂–C₄ derivatization), microbial-fuels as BioSAF, and microbial protein / single-cell protein (SCP) for feed, pet food, and specialty ingredient markets.
  • Industrial emitters (CCUS-complementary valorization: conversion of cement, steel, refining, pulp & paper flue gas CO₂/CO in situ to fuels/chemicals.
  • Syngas & Waste-to-X platforms: Integration with biomass/MSW gasification to biologically channel syngas into liquid fuels and chemical precursors.

TRL

The technology has been tested from laboratory scale (TRL2) up to 10L at pilot scale (TRL5) with already preselected candidates from mixed cultures and acetogenic bacteria.Upgrading to 100 L bioreactor (TRL6 ) is in progress.
