The ButaNexT European project aims to validate an integrated process more sustainable (economic, social and environmental) for the production of butanol from different types of raw materials that do not compete in the food sector (wheat straw, miscanthus and organic fraction of municipal solid waste). In addition, the properties of different mixtures of butanol with fossil fuels (gasoline and diesel) and biofuels (ethanol and biodiesel) and motor behavior is also assed.

The project, which is coordinated by Green Biologics Ltd (United Kingdom) is a consortium involving several other nine European partners: Técnicas Reunidas, CENER, Zabala Innovation Consulting and University of Castilla – La Mancha (Spain), Dyadic Nederland BV (Netherlands), C-TECH Innovation Limited and E4tech (United Kingdom), VITO – Flemish Institute for Technological Research and Greenovate! Europe (Belgium).

CENER plays a relevant role in the consortium where participates as scientific coordinator and lead the work package for the processes of pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation and recovery of biobutanol “in situ” assigned to scaled and integration on pilot plant. These activities take place in the Second Generation Centre of Biofuels of (CB2G) that CENER provide in the town of Aoiz navarra.

The ButaNext project, which has been approved within the topic “LCE-11-2014 Developing next generation technologies for biofuels and sustainable alternative fuels” of the program of research and Innovation Horizon 2020 in the European Union (Agreement No. 640462), is extended over 36 months and has a budget of 4.599,414 euros.
