Value Proposition

The technology developed by CENER enables companies in energy-intensive high temperature industrial sectors to use a torrefied solid biofuel easily pulverizable, with higher calorific value and very high energy density, that reduces their dependence on fossil  solid fuels (coal or petcoke) and reduces the impact of carbon taxes (CO₂ emissions).

Added Value

CENER’s innovative pretreatment technology improves biomass by combining physical and thermo-chemical steps, increasing energy density, removing impurities, and enhancing high-temperature behavior. The process is customizable to the characteristics of the feedstock, optimizing production costs and application requirements, while steps like washing help prevent fouling, corrosion, and sintering, ensuring efficiency and reliability throughout.

Market Applications

Reduces fossil fuel dependence and minimizes carbon tax (CO₂ emissions) impact in:

      • Heavy Industry (hard-to-abate sectors): Substitutes coal or coke in cement, steel, lime, glass, bricks, and ceramics, providing renewable high-temperature heat.
      • Chemicals & Materials: Acts as feedstock for syngas, bio-based chemicals, and fuels, while also supplying energy in pulp & paper processes.
      • Gasification fuel: Acts as feedstock for syngas production in entrained flow gasifiers for advanced biofuels production.

TRL

The technology has been tested from laboratory scale in 9L batch reactor (TRL4) up to a continuous 150-350 kg/h pilot plant (TRL7) including chipping, chopping, drying, thermal treatment, pelletization and washing.
