SHORT: Advanced Heliostat Calibration System for Optical Precision in Solar Plants
TECHNOLOGY READINESS LEVEL (TRL): 3-4
IP STATUS: The technology is protected by an international patent. Link to international patent: WO/2017/055663

Value Proposition

SHORT is an optical calibration system developed to correct deviations in the pointing of heliostats in solar tower plants.

Added Value

Conventional methods often ignore the combined effects of optical aberrations—such as coma, off-axis astigmatism, or sphericity—and imperfections in facets and structures. Short integrates kinematic models and advanced optical simulations with algorithms that estimate the ideal orientation of each facet. The system employs low-cost cameras that provide robust measurements and allows parallel calibrations on multiple heliostats, ensuring speed and scalability over large solar fields.

Market Applications

The impact on operation is significant: SHORT can reduce losses due to point mismatches and improve beam concentration on the receiver, with production gain estimates of between 2 and 4% in high-power plants. It is offered as licensed software or as a calibration service, making it a flexible and cost-effective solution for operators looking to increase the efficiency of their facilities.

TRL

It is currently in the initial phase of experimental validation (TRL 3-4), with positive results in simulation tests and prototypes. The technology is protected by an international patent.
